Doi Suthep Temples & Hiking Tour
Chiang Mai
+3
Hike to Wat Pha Lat, the hidden forest temple on Doi Suthep. This secret temple is a beautiful haven of peace, in a garden with beautiful statues.
Then visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the Buddhist temple draped in gold. Overlooking the city from its mountain throne, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples, and a beautiful example of northern Thai architecture. From the temple you can enjoy a panoramic view over the city.
Pick up from hotels in the center of Chiang Mai by a typical ‘songtaew’ or ‘rot sii daeng’ (a converted pick-up truck with two rows of back benches).
The songtaew drops us at the starting point of the Monk’s Trail where we begin our hike to Wat Pha Lat.
Wat Pha Lat is the jungle temple of Chiang Mai and it is also the finishing point of the popular Monk's Trail, an ancient pilgrimage route.
This hike is along a trail that for many years has been used by monks to ascend Doi Suthep (Suthep Mountain) enroute to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple. It takes between 30 and 45 minutes to hike the Monk's Trail to Wat Pha Lat.
Wat Pha Lat, the secret jungle temple, was built in 1355 and with its old stone buildings, intricate carvings and statues, and plenty of breathtaking places to meditate, it’s clear why people claim Wat Pha Lat is a hidden gem in Chiang Mai.
From Wat Pha Lat we continue by songtaew to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, considered to be one of the most sacred pilgrimage spots in Thailand and a must-see for anyone visiting Chiang Mai. The temple can be reached via the so-called ‘dragon staircase’, a staircase with more than 300 steps flanked by a ‘Naga’: a mythical serpent with seven heads. Instead of walking to the top, you can also take the cable car (fee not included).
Once you are at the temple grounds you will see statues, pagodas, shrines, bells and Buddhist drawings inside. The original chedi (also called stupa or pagoda, a conical structure in which sacred relics are kept) covered with copper is the most sacred part of the temple. You will learn more about the history of this temple and the meaning of the paintings on the wall, depicting the life of Buddha.
Overlooking Chiang Mai from its lofty perch, 1053 meters above sea level, the temple is best visited on days free of cloud or heat haze; the view of the city, and the Ping valley beyond, is breathtaking.
Afterwards the ‘songtaew’ will bring you back to your hotel or the meeting point in the city.

Awesome hiking experience in Chiang Mai
We have joined this tour on late June, and booked one day in advance. The time for the tour was 13:30pm but the tour guide, has arrived at 1310 in advance. He is a very friendly guy who speaks very fluent English.
During the whole tour, he was very professional and managed to answer us loads of questions. He even helped us to take lots of nice pictures.
We are highly recommended for this tour! Don’t miss it!

Best decision made in CM. Hike to Wat Pha Lat Temple with Sam!!
We enjoyed our trip so much that we wanna leave Sam a 5- star review to support him!
We had the afternoon tour, there’re only 2 of us so it’s a VIP experience. Sam and his driver were both very friendly!
There was a small thunderstorm during our hike up but Sam had prepared rain coats for us, that’s really thoughtful! He also showed us many interesting facts about local plants so kept us entertained. I’ve learned so much.
The temple itself was magical, out of the worldly and easy one of the best spots in Chiang Mai. What makes it even better was his fount of knowledge about thai buddhism & culture. It wouldn’t be the same without his explanation & extra info on many statues we came across in the temples.
Overall, we had a blast despite the weather & it’s all thanks to Sam. He’s patient, kind and professional. We’d recommend this tour & his company to everyone!!

Ready and primed, rain or shine
Had a “VIP” tour and although it rained quite heavily toward the end of the hike, Sanam did a great job planning in advance and having a rain coat ready for me and powered through the tour. He was extremely informative and insightful and I definitely recommend him for this tour and even other tours that he leads. Well done.

Set the alarm and take the sunrise tour!
We did the sunrise tour and the early morning wake up was so very worth it! Our guide Sam was hugely informative, energetic, and very engaging during our tour of the temples. We loved being at the temples before all the tourists, it felt like it was only us and the monks. Both temples were beautiful, but the “secret temple” of Wat Pha Lat was magical and very atmospheric, especially in the early morning. Sam surprised us by bringing an offering of food to the monks at Wat Pha Lat and invited us to participate in the offering ceremony. It was a truly special experience. The walk down the Monk’s Trail was easy and scenic and Sam shared his knowledge of Chiang Mai’s flora and fauna as we strolled down the path. We highly, highly recommend this tour with Sam and the WanderSiam team. You can take the tour at other times in the day, but for an extra special experience set an alarm (or 3) and take the sunrise tour!
