Chiang Mai
In 1296, King Meng Rai founded Chiang Mai as the ‘new city’ of his thriving kingdom known as Lanna (which translates as ‘a million rice fields’).
The Kingdom of Lanna, which covered much of northern Thailand, was a thriving state long before the rise of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. Chiang Mai can trace its history back more than 700 years, making it one of the most historic cities in Thailand. Much of this legacy remains and wandering around the old town will reveal ancient city walls and gates, as well as temples that have stood for half a millennium or more.
Until today Chiang Mai retains its individual Lanna character and distinctive easy-going charm, making it unique among all Thai cities.
Chiang Mai, often called “Rose of the North”, is Thailand’s second most important city. From mountainous landscapes and National Parks to scattered temples and bustling markets throughout the Old Town, there is no shortage of great things to do in Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai is also a heaven for food lovers. Get your taste buds ready because there is nothing quite like Northern Thai cuisine! Don’t forget to try Khao Soi (northern Thailand’s signature dish) , Gaeng Hung Lay (northern style pork curry) and Sai Oua (northern Thai sausage).
